Wizard Island was created when the volcano erupted approximately 4,000 years age.Wizard Island is a small volcanic island which rises 767 feet above the lake.  It is a small crater which is 300 feet wide and 90 feet deep located on the west side of the lake.  Wizard Island rests on the summit of Crater Lake.

Wizard Island is studied closely by scientists because there are thick concentrations of moss hanging from the island’s edges.  Wizard Island also contains many large pits which are located within old moss beds.  These old moss beds contain layers of green and white algae which contain live cells growing at the tips of the moss.
