1. Mount Mazama began to grow along with the creation of Mt. Scott approximately 420,000 years ago.  The Mount Mazama volcano grew in an irregular shape as a result of overlapping lava flowing from several vents.   The Mount Mazama volcano was approximately 12,000 ft. above sea level.

 2.  Approximately 7,000 years ago a column of hot gas and magma was thrown into the air and then fell to the surface as pieces of frothy white pumice and volcanic ash.

3.  There were flows of hot ash and explosions from around the summit of Mount Mazama.  The Magma chamber continued to empty causing the underlying support for the mountain to crumble, the volcano collapsed. The mountain top disappeared.

4.  When the mountain top collapsed a caldera formed.   Water from the rain and snow filled the caldera which then created the nation’s deepest lake which is 1,932 feet and named Crater Lake.
